National Semiconductor leverages the flexibility, scale and scope of AT&T services to support its global activities.
A Global Footprint
Established in 1959, National Semiconductor is a world-leading supplier of analog-based semiconductor products, including stand-alone devices and subsystems in the areas of power management, imaging, display drivers, audio, amplifiers and data conversion. With headquarters in Santa Clara, California, National reported sales of $1.67 billion for its most recent fiscal year. It employs 9200 persons worldwide and has 5 manufacturing sites in the US, Scotland, Malaysia and Singapore. National also has 14 regional design centers in Europe and Asia Pacific and 16 based in the US.
Reducing costs, increasing productivity, AT&T is there where you need it
National uses highly sophisticated software tools to develop new chip layouts but to keep costs low must share the licenses for these as widely as possible. A network that links the central license servers as well as ensuring that National's worldwide design centers have easy, highly available, reliable, cost-effective and real-time connection is therefore of paramount importance. In addition, following the bankruptcy of its main network provider, National needed a solution allowing an easy and quick switch of its European WAN sites. In 2002, a contract with AT&T in Europe was signed for the provision of a scalable Internet based service with additional ISDN backup for virtually all of its important sites. In Asia Pacific, National is expanding its existing operations by building a new test and assembly plant in Suzhou, China. With growing communication requirements and a need to increase business productivity, the International Leased Line has been replaced by a reliable ATM high bandwidth network to support voice, data and multimedia communications between the US and China operations.
Improved Business Flexibility And Performance Globally
Fully managed and integrated, the AT&T solution supports National's networking needs globally in a seamless way, and also provides the flexibility needed to meet future demands of migration and network evolution. AT&T's industry leading Service Level Agreements and strong financial stability provides National with the reassurance they need to operate with confidence in the global market place.
End to end service. Global. Secure Internet based solution. Mission critical applications. Mobile workforce.
AT&T connected 17 National Semiconductor sites in Western Europe and the headquarters in US Santa Clara, California using AT&T VPN Tunneling Services with ISDN backup at the important sites. In addition to the IPSec protocol that secures the solution, a dedicated AT&T firewall solution is in place to help fully secure the company's network, hosted at one of AT&T's Internet Data Centers. This solution helps ensure Internet security and privacy of data; sites are interconnected over a cost effective public IP network, but with the added security levels that AT&T VPN Tunneling, hosting and firewall services provide. In addition, National is rolling out a Dial & Broadband access environment which is fully integrated into the VPNsolution. This will equip the mobile workforce and teleworkers with the technology needed to access the network anytime, anyplace, and ultimately increasing company productivity. To support the expansion of its network in China, the company has implemented an AT&T International End−to−End ATM Service connecting the US and China locations. This provides flexible and scalable bandwidth on demand − from straightforward data to emerging multimedia communications and more importantly, fully supports the mission critical data flows such as Enterprise Resource Planning all on a single platform. The service provides virtually seamless end-to-end global transport, which is ideal for the high volume, high bandwidth traffic that National sends between China and the US. In addition, to protect the safe transportation of mission critical data and increase the productivity of its global network, separate local Internet access, provided by Unisiti, a joint venture between AT&T, Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Information Investment, is in place for its plant in Suzhou and its Shanghai branch office.
