Technology's Role in Climate and Resource Resilience

For AT&T, sustainability is not just about the environment. Yes, we strive to protect the environment by consuming less energy, but we also believe sustainability is about engaging our workforce and our communities, and providing products and services that empower people to live better.

You can find out more about our sustainability work on our sustainability website or view our sustainability video.

Our world is facing significant questions in the 21st century. How will we continue to support 9 billion people without inhibiting our natural environment's ability to support us? The future depends on the well-being of our planet. Our technology can help communities and businesses conserve natural resources, but we know we have to look after our own impact, as well. Through research, innovation and collaboration, we’re building tools designed to help us become more climate resilient.

Environmental impacts related to resource scarcity and volatile weather can disrupt a company’s business operations. Technology companies are in a unique position to help customers – from individuals to large enterprises and government organizations – mitigate their own environmental impact and improve their resiliency.

Our Climate Change Policy states our belief that AT&T recognizes climate change is happening and that greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to it. We believe that our technology has the ability to lower emissions for our company and our customers. Technology will continue to play a critical role in transitioning to a more resource efficient world, increasing business resiliency and improving daily lives.

2014 Goals 2014 Progress Toward Goal

  • Collaborate with information and communications technology (ICT) peers, clients and third parties to detail real-world applications of ICT solutions delivering economic, social and environmental benefits.

2014 Progress to Goal: Peers

  • Working with GE, we are leading innovation around smart energy technology and solutions using the Internet of Things (IoT). Proofs of concept for energy management solutions are being developed and tested in AT&T’s M2M/IoT Foundry.
  • As part of AT&T’s alliance with IBM, we participated in the 2014 Smart America Challenge. The event focused on the socio-economic benefits of IoT, and featured our work on Smarter Cities.
  • AT&T M2M technology powers HydroPoint, a solution that manages water use and reduces water waste. HydroPoint uses M2M sensors to collect and monitor data, store data in the cloud, and connect it to other applications for business operations.

2014 Progress to Goal: Industry

  • AT&T collaborated with BSR on the report, “Advancing Environmental Sustainability in the Power Sector.” AT&T’s smart grid product solutions and research were referenced throughout the report via contributions from Smart Grid lead manager, Ed Davalos.
  • AT&T co-founded the nonprofit Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) with Cisco, GE, Intel and IBM to increase the adoption and interoperability of the Industrial Internet and IoT. IIC also advocates for increasing access to big data and the integration of data into business operations.
