Remington College Selects AT&T For $4.5 Million Networking Contract
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- AT&T today announced a three-year, $4.5 million contract with Remington College to provide voice and advanced networking services, integrating Remington's 22 U.S. campuses.
Remington College offers degree and diploma programs in a variety of specific job-related areas, such as computer skills, criminal justice, operations management and medical assistant.
AT&T's network-based Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) solution allows all Remington campuses to directly access the Internet, the college's e-mail system and Remington's customer relationship management (CRM) application, even though the systems are hosted in different locations.
Prior to this network redesign, remote campuses relied on a frame relay-based, "hub-and-spoke" network and could gain access to the Internet and critical applications only through the network "hub" at Remington's headquarters -- meaning that if headquarters lost connectivity, "spoke" facilities also lost access to critical applications and the Internet.
The AT&T networking solution leverages Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology to provide a simple, low-cost and far more reliable networking solution. MPLS allows different types of existing network platforms -- Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), frame relay and IP, for instance -- to seamlessly communicate with each other. As a result, Remington's campuses can now communicate with each other directly using an IP-based network rather than sending data through the headquarters network "hub."
"As our business grows and we build new college campuses around the country, it is crucial that our network grows with our business," said Bob Lutz, CFO of Remington Colleges. "AT&T provided a simple, low-cost solution that leveraged our existing network investment and infrastructure, yet provided us with significant gains in security, reliability and scalability."
Drawing on the advantages of MPLS technology, Remington is also implementing videoconferencing capabilities for all of its campuses that will allow faculty and administrators to easily discuss planning and administrative matters.
