AT&T to Conduct Network Disaster Recovery Exercise in Washington, D.C.
Exercises Test and Evaluate the Company's Disaster-Response Systems, Strengthen Business-Continuity Support for Federal Government Agency and Enterprise Customers
Vienna, Virginia, June 7, 2006
Given the vital rising importance of ensuring business-continuity during disasters, subsidiaries of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) will conduct their Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) exercise at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., from June 7 to 8, 2006.
AT&T's Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) exercises are conducted several times a year and are designed to test, refine, and strengthen the company's business- continuity and disaster-response services in order to minimize network downtime. By simulating large-scale disasters and network service disruptions, AT&T can apply and refine best practices for rapidly restoring communications to government and business customers.
The Washington, D.C., NDR exercise will feature 24 trailers, 19 of which are semi-trailers. Following Hurricane Katrina's landfall last year, the NDR team deployed five satellite units in Louisiana and Mississippi to provide command and humanitarian relief communications to federal, state and local agencies.
"Hurricanes Katrina and Rita reinforced the importance of maintaining communications and business-continuity during a disaster and the need to be fully prepared," said, Robin Bienfait, senior vice president of AT&T Global Network Operations.
"As a mobile, full-readiness NDR team with proven experience, we are looking forward to providing our federal government agencies and D.C.-area business customers with the opportunity to examine how AT&T can help them maintain their communications and operations during catastrophic events."
During the past 10 years, AT&T has invested more than $300 million in its NDR program, which includes specially trained managers, engineers, and technicians from across the United States, as well as a fleet of more than 150 self-contained equipment trailers and support vehicles that house the same equipment and components as an AT&T data-routing or voice-switching center.
The NDR team also uses its mobile satellite capabilities to provide communications support for humanitarian relief efforts. AT&T emergency communications vehicles (ECVs) may also be deployed to provide calling capability for people isolated from their normal communications channels because of widespread disasters and/or evacuations.
Since 1990, the NDR team has been activated 21 times in response to disasters, including the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York City's World Trade Center.
