AT&T Supports Parikrma Humanity Foundation to Improve Quality of Education for Disadvantaged Children in India
BANGALORE, India, 2 December, 2010 — AT&T* has announced a contribution of US$15,000 (INR684,000) to Parikrma Humanity Foundation (Parikrma) to help provide quality education to disadvantaged children in India.
Founded in 2003, Parikrma is a non-profit organization that is transforming education for disadvantaged children in urban India, so that they can have equal access to the best opportunities. Parikrma manages the entire education cycle from kindergarten to college for each child. Parikrma has set up four Centres for Learning in Bangalore that provides the program to 1,116 children coming from 28 slum communities and six orphanages.
AT&T has been supporting Parikrma since 2008. AT&T has made a contribution of US$25,000 in 2008 and 2009 to support the salaries, benefits and training of ten teachers across the Centres of Learning in Bangalore. Additionally, AT&T Bangalore employees and their families have been devoting every alternate weekend to engaging the children in different educational and sporting activities. AT&T’s contribution in 2010 will continue to support Parikrma’s initiatives to support disadvantaged children in India to receive better education.
"We are delighted to continue to support Parikrma in 2010 to help improve the lives of underprivileged children by providing education, nutrition, health care and family care,” said Gopi Gopinath, chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T Global Network Services India. "Parikrma’s work speaks for itself. As an organization, they have endeavoured to give real opportunities to Indian children who cannot easily help themselves. By supporting Parikrma in such a noble cause, we are deeply honored to make a measurable impact on the educational and future economic success of at-risk youth. As well as that, the personal satisfaction and enrichment that the employees and their families are gaining through these volunteering undertakings is invaluable.”
“At Parikrma we take a child at five in kindergarten and go all the way through school, pre-university and college till the child gets a job. Only that way can we ensure all our efforts are successful. By supporting us for a third year, AT&T recognizes that sustained support is needed for long-term change. This grant will allow us to continue to invest in our teachers and raise their level of excellence, thereby ensuring that our children have the best possible education,” said Shukla Bose, Founder-CEO of Parikrma.
