AT&T Improves Lives of the Handicapped With Shantidhara
NEW DELHI, India, 1 July 2009 — AT&T* has announced a contribution of US$12,500 (INR601,562) to Shantidhara in India. The contribution will facilitate construction of a dormitory at the Loni Home for Physically Challenged Children which will nearly triple the number of children served.
Shantidhara, founded by Mariam Thresia in the year 1914 in Kerala, works to improve the lives of underprivileged children and to empower women and people in need. At Loni, Shantidhara provides the children shelter, food and education at a school very near their hostel. AT&T India’s contribution will expedite the construction and completion of a dormitory for physically challenged children who otherwise may not have a home or the opportunity for education. Simultaneously, the funds will be used to support nourishment, treatment and education for these physically challenged children.
“AT&T understands that children are the future of the country. India has tremendous potential for economic growth and that potential largely lies in the hands of today’s young people. By supporting Shantidhara, AT&T is helping bring children, who otherwise may not have the opportunity to realize their potential, to develop and become contributors to society and to economic growth in the time to come,” Mark Shine, president, AT&T Communications Services India Pvt. Ltd. "Providing education, shelter and treatment will help physically challenged children reach for their full potential and build a better life for themselves. Shantidhara is known for its dedication to helping children and women. AT&T is pleased to be able to partner with Shantidhara to help the children at LONI Children’s Home.”
“Shantidhara engages in social service activities aimed at improving the economic, educational and social conditions of physically handicapped children to advance the common good and improve lives. In India, there is a growing population which can revolutionize the future of the country,” said Sr. Ruby Joseph, chief president, Shantidhara. “We are delighted to have AT&T providing much needed support to us in our ongoing efforts.”
