AT&T Global Services Unites with UNICEF Canada
AT&T Contributes $40,000 to Support the Fight Against Malaria in Africa
TORONTO, March 13, 2008 - AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) today announced a contribution of $40,000 to UNICEF Canada. The donation was made in support of the Spread the Net campaign to raise awareness and help reduce malaria-related deaths in Africa. The funding received from AT&T will assist Spread the Net and UNICEF Canada in raising sufficient funds to purchase and distribute 500,000 insecticide-treated bed nets to children younger than 5 and pregnant women in Liberia and Rwanda. Malaria is the leading cause of mortality in children under the age of 5 in these two countries.
Spread the Net is designed to educate, motivate and inspire Canadians to help eradicate malaria by raising the funds to provide bed nets and malaria-prevention education to families at no cost. A simple bed net can protect sleeping children from the mosquitoes that transmit the disease. The campaign was started after Belinda Stronach and comedian Rick Mercer travelled to Africa in 2006 with professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the U.N. Millennium Project, and witnessed the destructive, yet avoidable, impact that malaria has on African nations.
"It’s essential that Canadians get involved to help protect children from this preventable disease," said Stronach, national co-chair of Spread the Net. "AT&T’s support is helping us achieve our goal of 500,000 bed nets and, as a result, is making a significant difference for children in Africa."
UNICEF is a global leader in malaria prevention among children and is the largest purchaser of insecticide-treated bed nets in the world. The organization supports the development of malaria-prevention technologies, including the production of long-lasting solutions for net treatment.
"AT&T Global Services Canada is committed to improving the quality of life for children around the world," said David Denault, general manager, AT&T Global Services Canada. "The work being done by UNICEF and Spread the Net is extremely important to the people in our global community, and we are proud to support them."
