AT&T Long Distance On Local Bill

Occasionally, there will be instances when you will see AT&T long distance calls billed on pages included with your local telephone company bill. We have listed some of the reasons why this might happen and solutions to help you resolve this issue. Please select which situation applies to you. If more than one situation applies, you will always have the opportunity to return to this page to review the other options.

AT&T Charges Billed by a Local Telephone Company

You are billed an AT&T charge(s) for an operator handled call (Collect, 3rd number or Calling Card)

If a long distance call originates from a telephone that is connected to AT&T for long distance service, the charge for that call will be billed by AT&T even though you may have another provider for long distance service. Specific examples of these types of calls include:

Collect Calls

Collect calls occur when someone at your business agrees to accept charges for incoming calls to your business.

Each collect call lists the place and number the call was made from, as well as other information including date, time, duration, and type of call.

Collect Calls - Call Detail.

An easy way to tell if the call in question is a collect call would be to check either of the telephone numbers associated with that call. If your number appears in the "Calls billed to" field, it was probably a collect call.

3rd Number Calls

A Third number call appears on your bill when someone places a call from somewhere outside of your business to another location and has the operator bill the call to your business number. Each Third number call lists the line number the call was billed to, the place and telephone number that the call was made to and the place and number the call was made from. It also includes other information about the call including date, time, duration, and type of call.

3rd Number Calls - Call Detail.

An easy way to determine if the call is a Third number call is to check the telephone number the call was billed to. If your number appears next to the "Calls billed to" field, it was a Third number billed call.

Calling Card Calls

Calling card calls are billed when someone uses an AT&T Corporate Calling Card to place a call. Another situation might be when your local telephone company's calling card was used and the call originated from a telephone that is connected to AT&T for long distance. In either case, the charges for the long distance call will be billed by AT&T.

Each calling card call lists the place and number called to and the number the call was made from, as well as other information including the date, time, and duration, and type of call.

Calling Card Calls - Call Detail.

If you see calling card charges on your bill that you don't recognize, they may be the result of a lost or stolen calling card. If you have an AT&T Corporate Calling Card and you have such charges, please contact 1 800 882-2273 immediately. If you have a card that was issued by your local telephone company, you should call their offices as soon as possible. Their telephone number is located on the first or second page of the bill.

Your AT&T long distance business account does not include this line(s)

Sometimes long distance calls will appear on an AT&T page of your local telephone company bill even though you are receiving a separate bill or statement of your long distance charges directly from AT&T.

This is usually a result of a new line being added to your business, however, AT&T was not notified of this new service installation. Or, the line may have been overlooked when your AT&T account was established.

To correct these two conditions, follow these simple steps:

  • Identify the correct AT&T direct billed account number for future billing
  • Fax or mail to us copies of the AT&T page(s) of your local telephone bill along with the account number

All inquiries will be responded to via fax, e-mail, or U.S. Mail within three (3) business days of receipt of the information. Please be sure to include your name, daytime telephone number, fax number or e-mail address for a prompt response.

Your service was inadvertently switched to AT&T

This switch happens when due to a processing error, AT&T was assigned as your primary long distance provider even though your business may have chosen another primary long distance service provider for your business lines.

It is easy to correct this situation... contact your local telephone company and advise them of the situation. Their telephone number is located on the first or second page of the bill.

You were charged for a line that does not belong to you

You may be charged incorrectly for a line or telephone number that does not or no longer belongs to your business.

To have this line removed, you must notify your local telephone company. Their telephone number is located on the first or second page of the bill. To receive credit from AT&T for the calls billed to this line(s), follow these simple steps:

  • Identify the date this line(s) was disconnected from your business if this line belonged to you in the past
  • Fax or mail to us this date along with copies of the AT&T page(s) of your local telephone bill where these charges appear.

All inquiries will be responded to via fax, e-mail, or U.S. Mail within three (3) business days of receipt of the information. Please be sure to include your name, daytime telephone number, fax number or e-mail address for a prompt response.

You would like information on how the AT&T access code might have been used to place calls

If you have chosen a long distance service provider other than AT&T, AT&T charges may still appear on your local telephone company bill. This can happen if the caller begins dialing the call with the AT&T access code, 10-10-288, before dialing the long distance number.
