AT&T SUPPORTS AKANKSHA FOUNDATION
TO IMPROVE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN IN INDIA
NEW DELHI,
Nov.
22, 2007 —
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced a contribution of US$26,250 (INR
10,76,625) to Akanksha Foundation to improve the lives of less-privileged
children in India. Founded in 1990, Akanksha Foundation is a non-profit
organization that focuses on giving children the education, training and skills
to enable them to maximize their potential and change their lives.
Throughout the past 16 years, Akanksha Foundation has managed to create opportunities for more than 2,400 children who study in 54 Akanksha centres (32 in Mumbai and 22 in Pune) and another 2,000 children through the School Project (four schools in Mumbai and six in Pune). Akanksha takes a novel approach to help children get a basic education by matching college volunteers with the children who need and want to be educated. Akanksha also makes use of underused spaces in private and government-aided schools, office spaces and public spaces for these children to receive education.
"AT&T intends to be a vital part of every community in which we do business, and to assist the places in which we live and work become as strong and vibrant as they can be," said Ronald Spears, group president, AT&T Global Business Services. "AT&T is fully committed to expanding in India, and the Akanksha Foundation is an admirable project that gives real opportunities to Indian children who cannot easily help themselves. We are deeply honored to give back to the Indian community and help underprivileged children.”
“Akanksha aspires to provide less-privileged children a balanced education that focuses on both intellectual and emotional development,” said Shaheen Mistry, founder of Akanksha Foundation. “The scope of Akanksha's work has grown significantly in the past few years, and the future holds even more promise. The AT&T contribution will enable Akanksha to improve the quality of education across Akanksha centres and provide more opportunities for the children to learn in multifaceted ways.”
Mr. Spears paid a visit to India on Oct. 31, 2007, and officiated at a
donation ceremony in New Delhi and presented the US$26,250 cheque to Ms. Seema
Kamble. Ms. Kamble is currently a human resources officer of Akanksha
Foundation, where she has received education at Akanksha centre for the past
nine years.
